The Crime Branch of Amravati police arrested two youths on Sunday evening and seized 2.88 kg of mephedrone (MD), a banned narcotic substance, valued at around rS3 crore in the illegal market.
According to police sources, the Crime Branch received specific information that two suspects were entering the city via the Lalkhadi-Sukali Road to sell MD drugs. Acting on the tip-off, officers set up a trap around 6:15 pm and intercepted the suspects.
The accused were identified as Abdul Fahim Abdul Rahim (25), a resident of Azad Nagar, and Sheikh Ayan Sheikh Ramzan (20), a resident of Dwaraka Nagar in Amravati.
A detailed search of the suspects led to the recovery of 2.88 kg of mephedrone, which had been packed in two separate packets. Police said the accused were allegedly attempting to sell the drugs to local buyers in the city.
Following the seizure, a case has been registered at Nagpuri Gate Police Station. The operation was led by Police Inspector Sandeep Chavan.
Police have also seized the vehicle allegedly used to transport the narcotics. Investigators are now probing the origin of the drugs, the intended distribution network, and whether the accused have links to other drug peddlers or previous cases in the region.
Authorities have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking, assuring informants of confidentiality and protection.
