CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A 20-year-old man was arrested after a high-speed chase that caused approximately $1,000 in damage to city property, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.
Christian James Decena was seen driving at 55 mph in a 35-mph zone on the 600 block of Nicholas Parkway East on Wednesday around 2:30 p.m. When an officer attempted to stop him, Decena fled westbound, running a red light at the intersection with Santa Barbara Boulevard before crashing.
The silver Kia sedan he was driving struck the center median and a traffic sign. Decena then drove the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Santa Barbara Boulevard.
Officers later located the vehicle with front-end damage near the intersection of SW 3rd Avenue and SW 8th Street. Decena was found at the scene examining the damage and was detained.
Police discovered the vehicle was unregistered and displayed a license plate assigned to a different vehicle.
Decena was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including fleeing to elude law enforcement with property damage, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, and operating an unregistered vehicle. He was also cited for speeding 55 mph in a 35-mph zone and failing to obey a steady red light.
