Berhampur: Rajesh Sharma, a 45-year-old cinema hall owner from Rourkela, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly cheating the proprietor of a Mumbai-based film company of Rs 39 lakh.

The case dates back to 2022 when the film company installed an advanced sound system in three screens at Sharma’s cinema hall located near the Old Bus Stand in Berhampur. Despite repeated requests, Sharma allegedly failed to make the payment, and all issued bank cheques were dishonoured due to insufficient funds.

The complaint was lodged by Sarju Ramesh Chandra Shah, the film company proprietor, at Berhampur Town Police Station. After a thorough investigation, police seized financial documents and Sharma’s mobile phone.

SP of Berhampur, Saravana Vivek M, stated that during the inquiry, it was also revealed that Sharma has a history of at least seven cheque bounce cases. The accused was taken into custody and is being questioned further.

Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the financial irregularities.
