expired food items from abroad, repackaging them, and selling them as fresh products, creating serious health risks for consumers.
During raids in Sadar Bazar, officials seized expired food products worth approximately Rs 4.3 crore and arrested seven people, including the alleged mastermind, Atal Jaiswal (54), who owned the godown. Other arrested individuals are Shiv Kumar (40), Bishwajit Dhara (25), Vinod (43), Arun Kumar (30), Vijay Kant (50), and Shamim (30).
The seized consignment included 43,762 kg of food items and 14,665 litres of beverages, comprising 6,047 kg of chocolates, biscuits, wafers, candies, and chips, and 23,050 kg of ketchup, sauces, vinegar, and mayonnaise.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora stated that the raids were conducted at Pahari Dheeraj and Faiz Ganj, well-known wholesale market areas in Sadar Bazar. Officials from the Delhi government’s Food Safety Department were called to collect samples and ensure proper seizure of the items.
Police investigations revealed that Jaiswal allegedly sourced near-expiry food products cheaply through Mumbai-based agents, who imported items from the UK, US, and Dubai, before repackaging and selling them locally as fresh.
