by Ananya Mehta

The Cyber Crime Branch of Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested five individuals in connection with a large-scale cyber fraud racket. The arrests took place in the Maheshtala area following a raid based on credible information.

The accused have been identified as:

Abhimanyu Kumar alias Raja Kumar (22)

Md. Samar (20)

Niraj Kumar (28)

Md. Imran (19)

Cezane Philips (22)

During the raid, police seized 10 laptops, 24 Android mobile phones, two routers, and numerous incriminating screenshots.

According to authorities, the accused created and circulated malicious APK files via advertisements and social media links. Once installed on victims’ devices, these APKs allowed the criminals to gain unauthorised remote access, including control over banking and financial applications, enabling them to siphon funds from the victims’ bank accounts to accounts of their choice.

Investigations revealed that these five men were associates of previously arrested criminals and acted as part of the same organised cybercrime network.

A senior Kolkata Police officer stated that the accused will be produced in court, and police will seek their custody to further interrogate them and identify other members of the organised criminal group.
