The Delhi Police have arrested two men for allegedly duping a divorced woman of gold jewellery worth several lakhs by posing as a prospective groom on a matrimonial platform.
The accused — Abhinav Singh (31) and Karan Sharma (26) — were arrested in connection with a cheating case registered at the Parliament Street Police Station on February 17.
Woman Lured Through Matrimonial Portal
The case surfaced after a 35-year-old woman from Panipat alleged that she met Abhinav through a matrimonial website. According to a senior police officer, the accused convinced her to meet at a religious place in Delhi.
He allegedly persuaded her to hand over her gold bracelets and chain for “safekeeping” before fleeing with the jewellery, her mobile phones, and important documents.
CCTV Footage and Technical Surveillance
Investigators examined footage from more than 200 CCTV cameras and employed technical surveillance to trace the suspects. Within 24 hours, police successfully tracked down and arrested the duo.
During interrogation, Abhinav reportedly confessed to targeting divorced women across multiple cities by gaining their trust through matrimonial platforms.
Jewellery Mortgaged in Malviya Nagar
Police revealed that Sharma, a cab driver, assisted by arranging a vehicle fitted with a fake number plate to help Abhinav escape after committing the crime.
The stolen jewellery was later mortgaged at a gold-buying shop in Malviya Nagar for approximately Rs3 lakh. Authorities said the accused had already received Rs1 lakh before being apprehended. The jewellery has since been recovered.
Further investigation is underway to determine if more victims were targeted in similar scams.
