In a high-profile digital fraud case, cybercriminals allegedly duped a 74-year-old retired medical officer of IIT Bombay of Rs4.62 crore by threatening her with fabricated CBI action in a fake money-laundering case.

Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the scam. Narendra Sinha and Gunjan Devkumar Dineshchandra were taken into custody by the Western Region Cyber Cell of Mumbai Police for providing bank accounts that the cybercriminals used to park the victim’s money, according to PTI reports.

Officials said the victim first received a video call from a person impersonating a telecom department official. Subsequently, another accused posed as an IPS officer, alleging that her Aadhaar card had been misused to open a bank account involved in transactions worth Rs6 crore, claiming she could face arrest under a CBI-registered money-laundering case.

Under this pressure, the victim transferred Rs4.62 crore from her recurring and fixed deposit accounts between October 2025 and January 2026 into accounts provided by the scammers. She later realized she had been cheated and approached the police.

A case of cheating by impersonation and offences under the Information Technology Act was registered and later transferred to the Western Region Cyber Cell for further investigation.

Police traced the money trail to Sinha and Dineshchandra, who had opened multiple bank accounts and provided them to the cyber fraudsters. The duo reportedly withdrew the deposited funds and handed them over to the criminals in exchange for a commission. Following their arrest, the cyber cell is continuing the probe to identify and apprehend the other scammers involved.
