CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Southeast Michigan man was convicted Thursday in the murder of his girlfriend and the mother of his child, authorities announced.
Jaion Barnes, 25, of Clinton Township, was found guilty after a six-day trial in the 16th Circuit Court of Macomb County. The jury convicted him of second-degree murder, felony firearm, weapons possession by a felon, and domestic violence, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said.
The victim, Tianna Ross, 23, had gone to Barnes’ home at Peachtree Apartments on Jan. 15, 2024, to drop off their 2-year-old child. Prosecutors said an altercation occurred during which Barnes shot Ross multiple times before fleeing the scene. He later turned himself in.
Barnes remains in custody at Macomb County Jail and is scheduled for sentencing on March 26. The second-degree murder charge carries a possible life sentence, and as a habitual offender – fourth offense, he faces a mandatory 25-year sentence for that designation.
“Today’s verdict holds the defendant accountable for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, the mother of his own child,” Lucido said. “This senseless act has left a child without either parent, and our hearts remain with that child and the family who must carry this loss forever.”
