Three policemen attached to the Nilgiris district police have been suspended for allegedly purchasing and consuming marijuana, officials said.
The incident came to light following the arrest of Cruz (26), a resident of Udhagamandalam, who was apprehended on January 21 for selling marijuana. During interrogation, Cruz disclosed that he had obtained the contraband from a police constable attached to the Ooty Town Traffic Police.
The constable was identified as Naseer Ahmed. Based on the revelation and subsequent verification, departmental action was initiated, leading to the suspension of three police personnel pending further inquiry.
Senior officials said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the extent of involvement of the suspended policemen and to identify any additional links in the drug supply chain. Authorities reiterated that strict action will be taken against police personnel found involved in illegal activities.
