SIT Formed to Probe Custodial Killing of Gangster Vinay Tyagi

Family Demands CBI Probe Over Alleged Conspiracy

by Ananya Mehta

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed in Haridwar to investigate the killing of gangster Vinay Tyagi while in police custody. The SIT will be led by the circle officer of Haridwar city, according to SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal.

Tyagi, a dreaded gangster with over 60 criminal cases across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi—including murder, extortion, and theft—succumbed to bullet injuries at AIIMS Rishikesh. He was shot by bike-borne assailants while being taken to court in Laksar near Roorkee on Dec 24.

His family has demanded a CBI probe, with his sister claiming Tyagi was killed because he had knowledge of a Rs750 crore black money stash of a UP-based businessman, which he intended to share with authorities.

Police have arrested Sunny Yadav, a convicted murderer, and Ajay Kumar, allegedly linked to Tyagi’s gang, in connection with the attack. Following a preliminary inquiry, a sub-inspector and two constables were suspended for lapses in security during Tyagi’s transit. Authorities noted Yadav may have had a monetary dispute with Tyagi and had previously threatened him.

Tyagi’s sister alleges a larger conspiracy, questioned the role of the police, and demanded security for the family. She also claimed Tyagi was transferred from Dehradun jail to Roorkee jail without his consent.

Tyagi had been arrested in October 2025 by Dehradun police in connection with a theft case and was transferred to Roorkee jail on Dec 12. The SIT will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his custodial killing.
