Basistha: Assam Police have busted a large-scale car rental scam, arresting its alleged mastermind, Rupjyoti Das, who duped vehicle owners by posing as a senior bank official.
Authorities reported that Das impersonated a Cluster Head of HSBC Bank and rented vehicles under the pretext of official banking purposes. After taking possession of the cars, he allegedly sold them to unsuspecting buyers, falsely claiming the vehicles were auctioned bank assets.
During the investigation, police tracked the fraud and recovered four vehicles from locations across Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh. The recovered cars included a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, a Maruti Fronx, a Mahindra Scorpio S11, and a Maruti Suzuki Brezza, all illegally disposed of.
Investigators said Das had carefully constructed a false identity to gain the trust of both vehicle owners and buyers, enabling him to execute the scam across multiple districts.
