Manjeshwar, Kerala: In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, 18-year-old student Mariyam Jumaila was allegedly murdered by her father, Ummar Farooq, at Kunjathur Hill Top near Manjeshwar on Monday evening.
According to police reports, Jumaila, a Plus Two student, was attempting to mediate a violent family dispute when she was fatally attacked. The altercation occurred around 6:00 PM at the residence of Farooq’s sister-in-law, where the family had been staying.
The conflict arose from a long-standing property dispute between Farooq and his brother-in-law, Sheikh Kunhi. During the heated confrontation, Farooq reportedly brandished a knife and tried to attack Kunhi. Jumaila intervened to protect her uncle and de-escalate the situation but was stabbed in the neck and leg, sustaining critical injuries.
Local residents, alerted by her screams, found Jumaila in a pool of blood and rushed her to a hospital in Mangaluru, where she was pronounced dead. Sheikh Kunhi also sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention.
Police Action and Investigation:
Arrest: Ummar Farooq was apprehended by Manjeshwar police shortly after the incident.
Weapon Seized: The knife used in the attack was recovered.
Suspected Motive: While the immediate trigger was a property dispute, police noted that Farooq is a known drug addict, which may have contributed to his violent behavior.
The body has been moved to the taluk hospital for a postmortem examination after the completion of the mahazar (on-site evidence collection). A formal case has been registered, and authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the killing.
