Investigations have revealed that Alprazolam drugs seized from five men, including a police constable, were stolen from the centralised storeroom (muddemal room) of Ahilyanagar police in December last year.

Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural, Sandeep Singh Gill, said on Tuesday that the Ahilyanagar police had raided a location in Shrirampur in May last year and seized a large quantity of Alprazolam. The drugs, in the custody of the court, were stored in the muddemal room at Ahilyanagar police headquarters. According to the arrested constable, Shyam Gujar, he stole the drugs from the muddemal room in December.

The Pune Rural police arrested five individuals from January 18 following the seizure of 10.7 kg of Alprazolam on the Pune-Nagar highway near Shirur. The case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Shirur police station.

The accused include:

Shyam Gujar – Police constable, Ahilyanagar crime branch

Shadab Riaz Shaikh – Shirur

Dnyandev Shinde – Parner

Hrushikesh Chitar – Parner, Ahilyanagar district

Mahesh Gaikwad – Shrigonda, Ahilyanagar district

SP Gill added that a letter has been sent to the Ahilyanagar police explaining how the Alprazolam was stolen after breaking the seal in the muddemal room. He said the arrested individuals were motivated purely by personal financial gain.

The investigation is ongoing to determine whether other police personnel from Ahilyanagar district may have been involved.
