Mumbai: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested Omkar Shinde on Sunday in connection with the fatal stabbing of college teacher Alok Kumar Singh inside a local train at Malad station on Saturday evening.

The victim, a 33-year-old faculty member at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, was reportedly attacked following a heated argument over alighting from a train compartment. Police sources confirmed that Singh sustained a deep stab wound to the abdomen and was rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali, where he was pronounced dead.

“Everything happened suddenly,” a police official said. “The accused stabbed the victim, got off the train, and fled.” Authorities later apprehended Omkar Shinde after investigations.

Singh, who had been teaching mathematics and statistics since 2024, was described by colleagues as calm, helpful, and never prone to anger. “He used to help resolve conflicts and was a kind soul. This incident is shocking for all of us,” said a fellow teacher.

Singh lived in Malad East with his wife. Relatives shared that the young teacher had recently married and came from a family with a strong educational background, with his father working for a political leader in Delhi and his uncle also being a teacher.

The GRP continues to investigate the case, looking into the motive behind the stabbing and whether others were involved.
