by Ananya Mehta

The Cyber Crime Branch of Kolkata Police has arrested five individuals involved in a cybercrime racket that targeted victims’ mobile phones to steal banking and financial information. The arrests were made following a raid in the Maheshtala area on Saturday.

The accused have been identified as:

Abhimanyu Kumar alias Raja Kumar (22) – Bihar

Md. Samar (20) – Bihar

Niraj Kumar (28) – Bihar

MD. Imran (19) – Bihar

Cezane Philips (22) – Maharashtra

Police seized 10 laptops, 24 Android mobile phones, 2 routers, and incriminating screenshots during the operation.

Investigations revealed that the gang created and circulated malicious APK files through social media advertisements and links. When installed, these APKs allowed the suspects unauthorised remote access to victims’ phones, including banking and financial apps. Using this access, they siphoned funds from victims’ accounts and transferred them to bank accounts controlled by the accused.

Further inquiries indicate that these five men were associates of a previously arrested gang, acting as part of an organised criminal conspiracy to defraud people using technology. The case remains under investigation as police attempt to trace additional victims and uncover the full scope of the operation.
