COVENTRY, R.I. — A Coventry woman is facing animal cruelty charges after her German Shepherd was found in a severely neglected state, authorities said.
On Dec. 19, Coventry Animal Control officers responded to a wellbeing check on Circlewood Drive. Officers discovered a male German Shepherd named Hanz confined to a sunroom. The dog was emaciated, with visible ribs, hips, and spine, and appeared to have no access to food or water.
Animal Control officers took custody of Hanz and transported him to an emergency hospital for treatment. 25-year-old Caitlyn Pelton, identified as the dog’s owner, was arraigned at Kent County District Court on charges of unnecessary cruelty to an animal, failure to provide adequate care, and failure to vaccinate for rabies.
Pelton was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and ordered not to have any animals. She is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 4. Authorities said Hanz has recovered and is now available for adoption.
