Police on Thursday arrested two men for allegedly murdering an elderly couple in Joshi Colony on December 1, officials said. SP Harvinder Singh stated that the accused, Om Prakash Kumar and Lalchand Kumar, killed the couple in a fit of rage while intoxicated, following a heated argument.
The victims, Mahavir Sao (67) and his wife Kaushalya Devi (63), ran a tea stall in front of their house, located opposite a stall operated by the accused. Police noted that frequent disputes over customers had been reported between the two sides, with Kaushalya Devi allegedly pulling customers away from the accused’s stall, leading to repeated altercations.
On the night of the incident, police said both accused, allegedly drunk, entered the couple’s residence behind their tea stall. They reportedly struck the couple on the head with a brick, rendering them unconscious, then slashed their throats and stabbed them repeatedly.
Mohammad Khurshid Alam, officer-in-charge of Harla police station, confirmed that police recovered the brick, knife, and blood-stained clothes of Om Prakash and Lalchand. Investigators also noted that Om Prakash ran an illegal parking business alongside his tea stall.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if there were any accomplices and to complete the legal proceedings.
