GATES, N.Y. — A Gates woman is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday after authorities accused her of stealing more than $140,000 from an elderly couple she was hired to care for.
Police said Cheryl Verde, 66, was arrested in January and charged with grand larceny. According to investigators, Verde provided in-home care for the couple and was granted Power of Attorney over their finances.
Authorities allege that between 2022 and 2025, Verde stole cash and jewelry belonging to the couple. She is expected to appear in court Wednesday afternoon to answer the charges.
The case follows other high-profile elder financial abuse prosecutions in the region. In 2024, home health aide Alpha Harris was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to repay more than $62,000 after prosecutors said Harris overbilled a 91-year-old woman and used the victim’s identity to obtain a $300,000 mortgage for a home in Greece, New York.
