SPARKS, Nev. — A Sparks man, Kyle Van Ness, 38, has been found guilty of failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving injury following a crash in May 2024, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
Authorities said Van Ness ran a red light at the intersection of Prater and Vista Way, striking another driver. Witnesses reported seeing Van Ness speeding and failing to maintain his lane before the collision. He then fled the scene.
A bystander followed Van Ness and photographed his car and license plate, enabling Sparks Police to identify and contact him at his home.
The victim, a veteran, suffered bruising and a broken finger requiring pins, surgery, and roughly five months of occupational therapy. She recounted bracing for impact due to her training, which mitigated further injuries.
Van Ness is scheduled for sentencing on Feb. 18. He faces up to 20 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections and a maximum $5,000 fine.
