The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Tamanna Chakma, also known as Tamie May, in India. She had been absconding despite her conviction in Mizoram for misappropriation of compensation bills of National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC Limited), officials confirmed on Sunday.

Chakma was apprehended in Guwahati, Assam, on Saturday following extensive field verification, physical surveillance, and analysis of call detail records. The CBI’s Shillong team detained her from the Geeta Nagar Police Station area.

The convict is scheduled to be produced before the jurisdictional court in Guwahati for a transit warrant, after which she will be taken to the Special Court at Aizawl, Mizoram.

Tamanna Chakma was convicted on May 17, 2024, along with 22 others by the Aizawl Special Court Judge. She had been absconding for years since her trial began. The CBI first registered the case on December 30, 2010, against 25 accused, including Chakma, for alleged misappropriation of NPCC compensation bills.

Despite persistent efforts during the trial to locate her, Chakma remained untraceable. The CBI eventually tracked her through mobile phone usage surveillance, analyzed call data from her family and friends, and confirmed her identity via physical monitoring before conducting a raid to make the arrest in India.
