CARY, N.C. — Cary police arrested a man known as the “TikTok trickster” on Wednesday, ending a multi-state search for a suspect authorities describe as a serial con artist.
Police identified the suspect as Brenton Fillers, 56, who was wanted in Baldwin County, Alabama, on a fugitive felony larceny charge, according to arrest records.
According to a report from an NBC affiliate in Mobile, Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber said Fillers has an extensive criminal history, including more than 30 aliases and dozens of pages of arrest records from jurisdictions across the country.
Barber said Fillers allegedly used social media platforms, including TikTok, to befriend women before scamming them out of money. In one 2023 case, authorities said Fillers stole a Spanish Fort woman’s car after initially contacting her through TikTok messages.
Spanish Fort police later received a tip that Fillers was in Wake County, North Carolina. Cary police located and arrested him at an apartment complex.
Fillers was being held at the Wake County Detention Center on a $15,000 bond as of Friday. Barber noted that it is unusual for a suspected fugitive to be granted bond.
Wake County court records show Fillers is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 12.
