SEGUIN, Texas — A former nonprofit employee has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $150,000 from the Guadalupe County United Way (GCUW) over a nearly two-year period.
Mary Hargrave, 60, was charged with theft of property exceeding $150,000 on Dec. 30, 2025, according to Seguin police and court records. The alleged misconduct reportedly occurred between December 2023 and July 2025.
Hargrave had worked with the nonprofit since 2018. Board members say she had relocated to Utah, citing illness and a desire to be closer to her son, and conducted meetings via Zoom prior to the fraud being discovered.
The organization noticed discrepancies in debit card charges and other financial irregularities, prompting the hiring of an independent auditor. The audit findings were then shared with law enforcement, resulting in Hargrave’s arrest.
The nonprofit emphasized that it has sufficient funds to fulfill obligations to donors and partner agencies through 2026. Guadalupe County United Way has also coordinated with the Comal County United Way, which will absorb GCUW’s service area and manage donor applications moving forward.
A GCUW spokesperson said, “We take this issue seriously and are pursuing every option available, including legal action. We have strengthened oversight and transparency for the board to prevent future incidents.”
