The Gomtinagar police have busted a gang that allegedly duped investors by promising high returns and then posing as Special Operations Group (SOG) or crime branch officers to intimidate them.
Four suspects were arrested late Thursday near Vineet Khand, Gomtinagar. The arrests came after an FIR filed on July 16 by Rajkumar, who alleged that the accused persuaded him to invest in a “money doubling” scheme. While the gang collected cash from him, they later refused to return it and threatened that, as crime branch officers, he should forget about the money.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Vishal Kumar (25), Ram Bahadur (46), Ram Prasad (34), and Anjani Kumar (40). Police recovered 30 bundles of play money labeled “children bank,” Rs 30,000 in real cash, a country-made .315 bore pistol with one live cartridge, and fake police IDs from the suspects.
DCP of the East Zone, Shashank Singh, said the gang approached victims promising to double their investments. After collecting funds, they allegedly posed as SOG or crime branch personnel to pressure victims into silence. Bundles of fake cash stacked with real currency were used during initial meetings to simulate liquidity.
Singh added that interrogations are ongoing to determine whether the group operated a wider inter-state investor scam, potentially using multiple mobile numbers.
