BOISE, Idaho — A former city clerk has been sentenced to federal prison for embezzling nearly $197,000 from the City of New Plymouth, authorities said.

Danielle Painter, 41, of Emmett, Idaho, served as the City Clerk/Treasurer from 2012 to 2023. Between 2017 and 2023, she used city credit cards for unauthorized personal expenses, including retail purchases, dining, clothing, travel, concerts, utilities, rent, and medical costs, totaling $196,947.87.

To hide her actions, Painter recorded many of these expenses as professional services in the city’s accounting system.

U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford sentenced Painter to 15 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Painter was also ordered to repay the full amount of $196,947.87 in restitution.
