by Ananya Mehta

In a shocking case from Latur, Maharashtra, Ganesh Gopinath Chauhan has been arrested for allegedly murdering a hitchhiker to fake his own death and claim a Rs 1 crore term insurance payout. Chauhan, reportedly in severe financial distress, had taken a loan of Rs 57 lakh to purchase a flat in Mumbai, and his income could not meet his obligations.

Under mounting pressure, Chauhan allegedly planned to use the insurance money to repay the loan and secure his family’s future. On December 13, he reportedly lured 50-year-old Govind Yadav, an intoxicated hitchhiker, into his car. Chauhan allegedly moved Yadav to the driver’s seat, secured him with a seatbelt, locked the doors, and set the car on fire.

Authorities discovered inconsistencies in the evidence during their investigation, which revealed Chauhan’s intention to make it appear as if he had died in the fire to claim the insurance. Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe confirmed Chauhan’s arrest and stated that further investigation is underway.

This case highlights the extreme measures taken by individuals under financial duress and has sent shockwaves through the Latur community.
