APPLE VALLEY, CA — A 75-year-old Apple Valley man outwitted a would-be scammer this week when he arranged for the suspect to be greeted by sheriff’s deputies, authorities say. The incident began Thursday with a “pop-up” ad appearing on the victim’s computer, claiming he had been scammed.
The ad directed the victim to call a number for help, and when he did, he was informed that his personal information had been compromised. The scammer instructed the victim to withdraw $35,000 in cash and meet an agent who would collect the money to “fix” the issue.
However, the victim recognized the scam and quickly contacted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies from the Apple Valley Police Department assisted the victim by setting up a sting operation.
At around 2:40 p.m., the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Alex Yu of San Francisco, arrived at the victim’s residence in the Jess Ranch neighborhood to collect the $35,000. Upon his arrival, Yu was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of attempted fraud.
Yu was released on bond the following morning, pending further legal proceedings.
Sheriff’s officials warned the public to remain vigilant about online scams. “Thousands of Americans are scammed every day by criminals preying on emotions,” the statement read. “Remember, legitimate banks and government agencies will never ask you to withdraw large sums of money and meet with agents.”
