In a startling case of police misconduct, three head constables—Yuvaraj and Mehboob from RT Nagar Police Station, and Maruti from Davanagere—have been arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for allegedly cheating a drug dealer out of Rs12 lakh under the guise of helping him recover money from a fake gold scam.
The victim, Tabrez, who operates a drugstore in Vijayapura town, Devanahalli taluk, was initially duped into buying what he believed were genuine gold coins discovered in farmland. After verifying a sample that turned out to be real, he later bought 2 kg more for Rs12 lakh, only to find out they were fake.
Following the fraud, Tabrez was approached by the head constables, who claimed they could help him recover the money. They demanded Rs75,000 as a commission and an additional Rs1 lakh for an informant. After showing him Rs8 lakh in cash as bait, they drove off, leaving Tabrez with nothing.
Realizing he had been cheated again—this time by law enforcement officers—Tabrez filed a police complaint. The FIR and subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the three constables, all now facing charges of fraud, cheating, and breach of trust.
The incident raises serious concerns about corruption within the police force and is currently under further investigation by the CCB.
