Coimbatore Rural Police arrested 26 people, including five college students, during large-scale raids at rental rooms and houses occupied by bachelors and students on Sunday. The operations, aimed at making Coimbatore a drug-free district, were conducted at 120 locations with the involvement of over 300 police personnel.
The raids were organized under the supervision of District Superintendent of Police Dr. K Karthikeyan, with 51 special teams led by two deputy superintendents of police. The searches focused on private hostels and rental houses in the jurisdiction of KG Chavadi, Chettipalayam, and Madukkarai police stations.
During the operation, police seized:
10.35g methamphetamine
4kg ganja and 2kg ganja chocolates
50ml ganja oil
Weapons including knives and machetes
22 two-wheelers without proper documentation
Vehicle checks in Chettipalayam also led to the arrest of four drug peddlers.
Notable arrests include:
R Gokul (20) from Dindigul and R Yogeshwaran (19), a student from Kinathukkadavu, caught transporting 1.5kg ganja and 35 ganja chocolates on a two-wheeler near Othakkalmandapam.
V Athithya (22) of Sivaganga and R Boobalan (19), an engineering student from Thanjavur, arrested from a rental house at Vinayaga Garden, Malumichampatty, with methamphetamine and ganja. Both were sent to judicial custody.
Dr. K Karthikeyan said that drug peddlers often target college students and use rental rooms to operate. Frequent raids are being conducted to curb drug trafficking, and the public is urged to report any information about drug sales to help make Coimbatore a drug-free district.
