Over the past week, 22 individuals have been arrested in connection with nine cyber fraud cases, concluded by police on August 2. The arrests were part of an investigation led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abhimanyu Goyat, under the Cyber Crime department.
The arrested suspects include Amit Mishra, Mohammad Masrur, Bijendra, Kuldeep Kumar, Divyanshu, Rijal Walia alias Shubham, Manish, Makhan Lal Aichra, Mukesh Yadav, Puneet Kumar, Aniket Yadav, Praveen Kumar, Anshul Singal, GN Anish, Sahil Sodi, Sameer Srivastava, Mohammad Sariq, Mohammad Tofiq, Mohammad Tosif, Mohammad Sahib Sahajad Ali, Surya Pratap Singh, and Sahanawaz Ali. They were taken into custody from various locations, including Delhi, Rajasthan, and other NCR regions.
The police managed to resolve five cases through the Cyber NIT police station, with two cases each handled by the Central and Ballabhgarh cyber stations. In total, police attended to 1,177 complaints, securing refunds of Rs 3,75,116 and freezing Rs 1,57,331 from the fraudsters’ accounts.
According to Goyat, cyber criminals have been targeting people with promises of lucrative job offers and fake employment opportunities, often via online ads and fraudulent websites. Many victims are extorted using fake stock market investments with promises of quick profits. By the time victims realize they’ve been scammed, it’s too late.
The criminals typically use a variety of tactics, such as offering fake jobs, promoting investments through deceptive apps, blackmailing individuals with inappropriate videos, and sending fraudulent messages related to tax bill payments. In many cases, the fraudsters persuade victims to transfer money using QR codes, UPI, or OTPs obtained by posing as bank officials.
