19 Arrested in North Austin Drug-Free Zone Crackdown

APD targets drug activity near schools to restore community safety

by Amelia Crawford

AUSTIN, Texas — Nineteen individuals were arrested following a two-month investigation by the Austin Police Department (APD) targeting seven high-crime areas in North Austin, six of which are designated Drug-Free Zones (DFZ) near schools and playgrounds.

The operation focused on shutting down open drug markets and reducing crime in neighborhoods long plagued by assaults, thefts, robberies, weapon offenses, and drug activity.

Detective Shawn Green of APD’s North Metro Tactical Unit said:

“Historically, these locations have been linked to assaults, thefts, robberies, and weapon-related offenses.”

The 19 arrested face charges including delivery of controlled substances in a drug-free zone, possession of controlled substances, possession of marijuana in a drug-free zone, possession of stolen firearms, tampering with evidence, aggravated robbery, and unlawful carrying of firearms.

Several of the arrests occurred near Webb Middle School, prompting concerns from local families. Brian Galvan, whose brother attends the school, urged continued police efforts:

“I feel like APD should keep doing more of this to keep the people safe.”

Hudson Lemon, a student who takes the school bus to Webb, added:

“It feels like there already kind of is a drug problem.”

During the crackdown, officers seized crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and illegal firearms. Detective Green explained the ongoing challenge:

“It’s a tricky part of the puzzle. What we’ve been doing is making arrests, identifying key players, and working our way towards other suppliers.”

APD plans to continue efforts to dismantle drug markets and keep neighborhoods safe. The department reminds families to stay alert, teach children about safety, and report suspicious activity.
