In a major crackdown, Delhi Police have arrested 13 members of a gang involved in stealing underground MTNL cables in Rohini, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The gang was caught in the act during the intervening night of April 6 and 7, when Pankaj (21), Lucky (18), and Abhishek (18) were caught red-handed digging up MTNL infrastructure in Sector 9 of Rohini.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team patrolling the area noticed a JCB machine operating suspiciously, along with several men digging near a telecom line. When questioned, the individuals failed to provide a satisfactory explanation and were detained on the spot.
Further Investigation and Arrests:
Upon interrogation, the trio disclosed the identities of other gang members, which led to the arrest of 10 additional suspects. Police have since recovered:
A JCB machine used in the theft
Around 10 kilograms of stolen MTNL cable
The accused revealed that the gang targeted underground telecom cables, unearthing them with the JCB and then selling the extracted copper wires to scrap dealers for profit.
Police suspect the group to be involved in several similar thefts across Rohini, and further investigation is ongoing.
