MEXICO, NY — A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on the morning of February 15 at a parking lot in Mexico, NY.
At approximately 2:54 a.m., state troopers responded to a 911 call reporting a physical altercation at the Tops parking lot located at 3385 Main Street. Upon arriving, investigators found that Zachary W. Chilson, 31, had engaged in a physical altercation with the victim before shooting and killing him.
The victim has been tentatively identified as 32-year-old Jacob Walsh of Mexico, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chilson, a resident of Mexico, was arrested the same day and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. He was remanded to the Oswego County Jail and was arraigned on February 16. Chilson remains in custody without bail.
In a separate incident, at approximately 6:04 a.m. on February 15, state troopers received a report of a stolen vehicle in the same area. Later, another stolen vehicle was found in Ogdensburg, and Kevin A. Doxtater, 32, of Oswego, was arrested and charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Investigators confirmed that these incidents were unrelated to the fatal shooting of Jacob Walsh.
The investigation into both incidents remains ongoing.
