Yunusu Mugabe, a former Local Government Commission official, former Resident District Commissioner (RDC), and former Hoima Municipal Council Speaker, has been arrested by police in Hoima City over land fraud allegations.
According to police, Mugabe sold a piece of land located in Bwikya Cell, Hoima City East, to businessman Yosiya Kamuhigi for Shs 80 million. However, he failed to provide a written agreement for the sale. Mugabe later resold the same land to another businessman, Denis Muhwezi, for Shs 300 million.
Kamuhigi made the payment for the land on January 30, 2024, but Mugabe’s wife refused to sign the sale agreement, stating that a family meeting was required. While Kamuhigi waited for the meeting, he discovered that Mugabe had already resold the property to Muhwezi at a much higher price.
Upon realizing he had been defrauded, Kamuhigi demanded a refund of his payment. Mugabe offered to return the initial Shs 80 million, but Kamuhigi insisted on an additional Shs 20 million in interest, totaling Shs 100 million. Mugabe refused the demand, prompting Kamuhigi to report the matter to the police.
Julius Hakiza, the spokesperson for the Albertine Region police, confirmed that Kamuhigi filed a complaint, leading to Mugabe’s arrest after a thorough investigation. Mugabe is currently being held at Hoima Central Police Station on fraud charges.
The police have recorded statements from all involved parties and have forwarded the case files to the Resident State Attorney for review and legal guidance. If the state attorney advises prosecution, Mugabe will be taken to court. Authorities are now awaiting further instructions on the case.
