Yingying Xu, 46, has been charged with the murder of her 10-year-old daughter, Sophie Wang, after allegedly slitting the girl’s throat in a tragic incident at their Carrara home on the Gold Coast.
On Tuesday evening, emergency services responded to a call from Sophie’s father, who found her unresponsive at the family home. Despite their efforts, Sophie could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Xu reportedly fled the scene, but police apprehended her on a nearby street about four hours later. CCTV footage captured Xu earlier that day driving a 4WD vehicle, which mounted the kerb near the family home before speeding off.
A disturbing video has surfaced in which Xu is reportedly heard discussing gods, demons, and spirits, with authorities stating that she told police she believed Sophie had been possessed by demons.
Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis described the scene as one of the most confronting of his career. “It was an incredibly distressing scene for the father, the police, and the community,” Ellis said.
Xu’s first court appearance occurred at Southport Magistrates Court, where she was not required to appear in person.
Sophie’s school, Emmanuel College, has offered support to grieving students and staff. The community has been left devastated by the loss, and the school has mobilized its counseling services to help students and families cope with the tragedy.
