Yalei Li, 38, of Rosemead, California, has been indicted in connection with a tech-support scam that targeted a 92-year-old woman in Pelham, New Hampshire, according to Attorney General John M. Formella.
A Hillsborough County grand jury indicted Li on one count of attempted theft by deception. He was arrested on April 8 after allegedly showing up at the woman’s home to collect $50,000 in cash.
According to investigators, the elderly victim had received a series of fraudulent phone calls. One caller posed as a representative from Apple Inc., falsely claiming her computer was hacked and her bank account compromised. Another person, pretending to be from her bank, told her to withdraw and deliver $50,000 to safeguard her funds.
Li allegedly traveled to the woman’s home posing as “Kevin,” the so-called bank agent, to collect the money. Authorities intervened before the handoff could be completed.
If convicted, Li faces up to 15 years in state prison and a $4,000 fine. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 7 in Hillsborough County-Southern District Superior Court.
