In a significant crackdown on the illegal trade of counterfeit drugs, a joint investigation led by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the Drugs Control Directorate, West Bengal, uncovered a large-scale operation in Kolkata. The authorities seized counterfeit medications valued at an estimated Rs 6.60 crore during a raid at a wholesale facility.
The operation targeted M/s Care and Cure For You, a business located in Kolkata, where a variety of counterfeit drugs, including anti-cancer and anti-diabetic medications, were found. These drugs, which had labels from countries like Ireland, Turkey, the USA, and Bangladesh, raised suspicion due to the absence of valid import documentation.
The seized products have been classified as spurious and are undergoing quality testing to confirm their authenticity. During the raid, additional evidence, such as empty packaging materials, was discovered, further supporting the belief that these drugs were counterfeit.
The owner of the business, a woman, was arrested by the CDSCO’s Drugs Inspector from the East Zone. She has been placed in judicial custody for 14 days while the investigation continues. Authorities are working to identify the full extent of the counterfeit drug trade in the region.
In a related operation, the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested two individuals, Sajibul Islam and Mustakim Mondal, who are believed to be involved in terrorist activities. A case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
This coordinated effort underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health by combating the sale of counterfeit drugs, which not only disrupts the pharmaceutical industry but also poses significant risks to consumers’ health.
