Williamsport Woman Arrested for Retail Theft at Wegmans

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Melanie Leigh Norman, 41, was arrested on January 5, 2025, after leaving Wegmans with groceries she had not paid for. According to police, Norman was stopped by retail theft and prevention officers after exiting the store with soup and chicken valued at $29.

The Incident

Norman, accompanied by Gianna Powell, claimed she mistakenly thought her friend had already paid for the items. Officer Jonathan Day, who filed the affidavit, reported that Norman offered to pay for the $29 worth of stolen goods. Powell was also detained and charged with summary retail theft.

A Repeat Offender

This is not Norman’s first encounter with the law for retail theft. She admitted to stealing from Wegmans in the past and had received a notice of trespassing from the store in November 2024. This marks her eighth arrest for retail theft.

Charges and Bail

Norman is facing charges of retail theft and defiant trespassing and was released after posting a $15,000 unsecured bail. Powell, a first-time offender, is charged with summary retail theft.
