West Palm Beach Attorney David Casals Faces Cocaine Smuggling Charges

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A West Palm Beach attorney, David Casals, is awaiting trial for a bizarre criminal case in which he allegedly tried to smuggle cocaine-laced papers into a county jail. Casals, 59, faces several felony charges, including trafficking in cocaine, related to the 2021 incident at the West Detention Center in Belle Glade. The case remains unresolved, despite taking place over three years ago.

According to the arrest report, Casals attempted to bring in 37 sheets of paper, 28 of which were reportedly laced with cocaine. The papers appeared swollen and water-stained, suggesting they had been soaked with diluted cocaine and then dried. Prosecutors claim each sheet could fetch up to $3,000 on the black market.

Experts warn that smuggling cocaine-soaked papers into a jail could create a dangerous situation. Lex Remillard, a specialist in addiction treatment, explained that the papers could be used as a form of currency within the prison, potentially fueling violence among inmates. He added that the cocaine-laced papers could either be smoked or dissolved in water to get high, further exacerbating the risks within the jail system.

Casals did not speak during his court appearance and has declined to comment on the charges. His next court hearing is scheduled for next month. If convicted, Casals faces a maximum sentence of 75 years in prison on charges of trafficking in cocaine, delivery of cocaine, and introducing contraband into county detention.
