AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Early on January 5th, at approximately 4:04 am, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a burglary alarm at Barney’s Pharmacy on Furys Ferry Road.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered Walter Tarver, the suspect, attempting to stuff medication into a duffel bag.

As additional deputies arrived at the scene, Tarver attempted to flee the premises, carrying two duffel bags filled with stolen items.

Authorities stated that Tarver exited the building through a broken window, which was believed to be his point of entry. Despite multiple commands from deputies to surrender, the suspect continued to resist and tried to escape.

In response to Tarver’s refusal to comply, one deputy deployed a taser. As Tarver continued to resist and shouted “It wasn’t me,” a second deputy also deployed a taser, successfully subduing the suspect.

Tarver was taken into custody without further resistance and evaluated for minor hand injuries by Central EMS. After receiving medical attention at Wellstar MCG, he was transported to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

Tarver faces multiple charges, including:

Smash-and-Grab Burglary
Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer
Giving False Name and/or Date of Birth to a Law Enforcement Officer
Further investigation also revealed that Tarver had active warrants for aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
