Walter Mzembi Arrested After Returning From Exile

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Walter Mzembi has been arrested and is set to appear at the Harare Magistrates Court today, according to reports from state media.

Mzembi, who fled Zimbabwe in 2017 following the ousting of then-President Robert Mugabe, had been living in exile until recently. He returned to Zimbabwe and was arrested on Friday, January 6.

Prior to his arrest, Mzembi reportedly held a private meeting with current President Emmerson Mnangagwa, though details of their discussion remain undisclosed.

He made a brief court appearance over the weekend, with proceedings postponed until today. The specific charges leading to his arrest have not yet been made public.

Mzembi previously served in top government roles under Mugabe’s administration and was a key figure in Zimbabwe’s foreign policy during his tenure.

This marks a significant development in Zimbabwe’s political landscape, as returning exiled officials face renewed legal scrutiny.
