Uttar Pradesh Man Arrested for Rs 20 Lakh Digital Arrest Scam

In a breakthrough, the Cyber Crime Police Station of Central Range, Mandi, arrested Kulveer (27), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, for his involvement in a Rs 20 lakh fraud. The arrest was made following a complaint filed by a former Army officer, who claimed that Kulveer had tricked him into transferring a large sum of money through a digital arrest scam.

According to Manmohan Singh, Additional SP at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Kulveer falsely accused the victim of being involved with illegal activities, including counterfeit passports and narcotics, and manipulated him into believing that he was in serious legal trouble. This tactic led the victim to transfer funds in a panic to avoid arrest.

Kulveer, a graduate, had been on the run for the past five months, frequently changing his location to evade capture. He was finally apprehended through technical surveillance, which tracked his movements and led to his arrest.

Authorities have issued a public advisory urging citizens to be cautious and avoid responding to calls from unknown numbers. They also emphasized the importance of immediately reporting any threats or extortion attempts related to digital arrests. The Cyber Helpline 1930 or local cyber crime units can be contacted for verification and assistance in such cases.

This arrest highlights the growing concern over digital extortion scams and the need for vigilance against fraudulent schemes that manipulate victims through fear and fake legal threats.
