Uganda’s Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, is in discussions with relevant UK government authorities regarding the arrest of Ugandan High Court judge Lydia Mugambe. According to a report from Thames Valley Police dated October 22, Mugambe was arrested as part of a modern slavery investigation in Oxfordshire.
Mugambe, 49, who lives in Kidlington, has been charged with three serious offenses: conspiracy to facilitate a breach of UK immigration law by a non-UK national, arranging or facilitating travel with the intent to exploit, and requiring a person to perform forced or compulsory labor. Her trial is set to commence on February 10, 2025, at Oxford Crown Court, with proceedings expected to last three weeks. She was formally charged on August 7, 2024, following a review by the Crown Prosecution Service.
The charges are linked to a modern slavery investigation involving a victim allegedly connected to work facilitated by Mugambe. Reports indicate that she was overseas pursuing further studies at the time of her arrest.
