Two 18-year-old men from Miami have been arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder following a shooting incident that took place on January 27 at Gerry Curtis Park. The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the park, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The suspects, identified as Rubén Ayala, the alleged shooter, and Reniery Josué Solís, the driver of the getaway car, have been linked to the incident. Both individuals are of Hispanic descent, but their country of origin has not been disclosed.
According to the Miami Police Department, Ayala fired shots at the occupants of another vehicle while they were parking at the park, located at 19th Street and 24th Avenue in Miami’s northwest. The shooting unfolded when one of the suspects approached the victims’ car, pulled out a gun, and fired several rounds as the victims tried to flee.
“The driver of the victim’s car sped off, but the suspects continued firing, hitting the vehicle multiple times,” said Mike Vega, a spokesperson for the Miami police, in an interview with America Tevé. One of the victims sustained minor injuries from the gunfire.
A critical witness helped authorities by photographing the license plate of the suspects’ getaway car and reporting it to the police. This led to an investigation, and soon after, the identities of the attackers were confirmed.
At this time, the motive behind the attack remains unclear. “We don’t know if the suspects knew the victims, or if it was an attempted robbery,” Vega explained. He praised the victim for avoiding further confrontation by driving away and not returning fire, despite having a gun in the car.
The two suspects appeared in Miami-Dade criminal court on Wednesday, facing multiple charges, including second-degree attempted murder. Judge Mindy S. Glazer denied them bail, and as of this report’s publication, no further details have been provided regarding the investigation.
