Floral Park, NY – Two men are facing charges for allegedly running a construction scam targeting elderly residents in Floral Park. Nassau County police report that 31-year-old David Young of Philadelphia and 25-year-old Adam Turner, who is currently homeless, were advertising their services under the name “Top Line Masonry” despite being unlicensed for contract work.
The suspects reportedly approached homeowners, offered construction services, and solicited cash deposits, with one homeowner losing as much as $15,000. After receiving the deposits, they allegedly caused additional damage to a chimney and a roof at the respective homes.
Local residents, like Carol Hogg, are cautioning others about unsolicited contractors. “I probably would not have people give me an estimate or do any work on the house unless I made some kind of solicitation,” she said, emphasizing the importance of recommendations from trusted neighbors.
Concerned residents have shared the “Top Line Masonry” flyer on social media to alert others, while neighbor Dena Handlin noted her mother’s vigilance: “She knows enough to watch for the red flags, so the door is always locked. We don’t answer the door.”
The New York State Department of Financial Services advises consumers to be wary of contractors who knock on doors seeking immediate repairs and demanding upfront payments. They recommend avoiding cash payments, looking out for discounts, and ensuring contractors are licensed.
Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to this scam is urged to contact the police.
