Two Georgia Men Arrested in Lafayette County Social Security Scheme

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two men from Georgia for their involvement in a social security fraud scheme, prompting investigators to look for more potential victims in North Mississippi.

On September 5, 2024, a victim contacted the sheriff’s office to report a suspicious call. The victim was approached by someone claiming to be from Amazon regarding a $4,000 computer purchase, which the victim had not made. The caller falsely informed the victim that their assets were frozen and that the Social Security Administration would reach out about their compromised social security number (SSN).

Subsequently, the victim received a call from someone impersonating an official from the Social Security Administration, complete with a photo of an ID badge. The impersonator instructed the victim to withdraw all funds from their bank account except for $1,500, stating that the Social Security Administration would pick up the remaining cash for “safekeeping” by the U.S. Department of Treasury until a new SSN could be issued.

Following these instructions, the victim withdrew the money and waited for the suspects to collect it the next day. However, feeling uneasy about the situation, the victim reported the incident to law enforcement.

This led to a sting operation, resulting in the arrest of 52-year-old Nasruddin Bhai Nooruddin and 69-year-old Chaturali Alauidin Roy from the Atlanta area. Both men have been booked into the Lafayette County Jail, and the sheriff’s office is collaborating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on the investigation.

Authorities urge the public to refrain from sharing personal information with unknown callers. The sheriff’s office has also received multiple reports of fraudulent calls claiming to be from law enforcement agencies. If you receive such calls, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
