Two Arrested for Theft of Bronze Veteran Markers in Indiana

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with a series of thefts involving bronze veteran markers from headstones in cemeteries across Indiana, according to local police.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office began its investigation on August 28 after receiving multiple reports of stolen bronze veteran markers, primarily from Union Mills and Rolling Prairie Cemeteries, as well as from cemeteries in Carmel, Pinola, Greenwood, and St. Stan’s. In total, authorities confirmed that at least 15 markers were reported stolen, with one additional marker damaged.

Following the public announcement of the investigation, which urged citizens to check on the graves of deceased veterans, credible information led detectives to identify a suspect just one day later. As a result, 53-year-old Terry Wood and 25-year-old Breanna Puentez were arrested in connection with the thefts.

Police reported that an operation named “Justice, Peace and Salute” was conducted at a residence on Andrew Avenue in La Porte, where Wood was taken into custody and additional evidence was recovered. Puentez was arrested later that day and charged in Circuit Court for her involvement in the theft ring.

Both suspects have been charged with one count of felony theft and 15 felony counts each of cemetery mischief. Wood is currently being held on a $15,005 cash-only bond, while Puentez is not eligible for bond.

Captain Derek J. Allen of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office expressed strong condemnation of the thefts, stating, “This type of criminal behavior is disgusting, unacceptable, and will not be tolerated in La Porte County!” He added, “We hope that the diligent investigation by Detectives Koch and Banic will ensure justice is served, allowing US Veterans, both deceased and living, to find peace and comfort with these arrests.”

The investigation into the thefts remains ongoing, and no court date has been announced for the accused individuals.
