Toronto Couple Arrested in Rent Fraud Scheme

A man and woman were arrested in a fraud investigation after allegedly refusing to pay rent while living at a property in Toronto.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) reported that between September 1, 2021, and March 28, 2022, the couple resided at a location near Maidstone Street and Rustic Road, close to Jane Street and Church Street in North York.

According to police, the pair initially paid the first and last months’ rent but then stopped making further payments. The homeowners sought assistance from the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board in hopes of resolving the situation.

It is also alleged that the couple provided fraudulent information to the Board, which TPS claims delayed the eviction process.

On Monday, police arrested 24-year-old Robert Babos of Toronto and 23-year-old Adrienn Kompusz of Mississauga. Babos faces four counts of fraud over $5,000, while Kompusz has been charged with three counts of the same.

Both individuals are scheduled to appear in court on November 4, 2024.

Their images have been shared publicly as police believe there may be additional victims of their actions.

In a recent news release, TPS provided tips for landlords on finding suitable tenants, including conducting interviews, credit checks, income verification, background checks, and checking references from previous landlords, as well as considering hiring a realtor.
