TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Topeka woman convicted of killing three children in a tragic car accident in 2022 was sentenced to more than five years in prison on Tuesday, December 3.
Shawnee County District Judge sentenced Amber Peery to a total of 64 months, which includes two consecutive 32-month sentences for two counts of reckless involuntary manslaughter. Additionally, Peery was sentenced to 72 months for another count of reckless involuntary manslaughter. Her two counts of aggravated battery will run concurrently with the 64-month sentence.
Peery was found guilty in August 2024 for the October 2022 crash on the Kansas Turnpike, which occurred when she attempted to make an illegal U-turn. The crash led to the deaths of three children, including Peery’s own daughter, while two other children in the vehicle were injured.
During her sentencing, Peery showed little emotion as she read a three-page statement apologizing to the families of the victims, acknowledging that her decision caused the deaths.
However, Jackie Lunn, the grandmother of one of the deceased children, expressed dissatisfaction with Peery’s lack of remorse, stating that she felt Peery was unwilling to take full responsibility for the accident.
Peery’s trial had been delayed several times, including in July 2023 when her case was pushed to August. She was later found guilty on all charges. In October 2024, Peery’s request for a new trial was denied.
This sentencing marks the conclusion of a lengthy legal process following the devastating crash.
