Tinashe Chigiya Remanded for Insulting President Mnangagwa

SHURUGWI, Zimbabwe – Tinashe Chigiya, a 26-year-old man from Makandire Village in Chief Nhema’s area, has been remanded in custody after allegedly insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The alleged incident took place on January 27, 2025, near the Musavezi River, following the tragic drowning of a minor. According to reports, Chigiya expressed frustration over environmental degradation caused by Chinese nationals mining sand in the river. He reportedly blamed President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF supporters for allowing these activities, claiming they had made the river unsafe for children.

During his remarks, Chigiya allegedly referred to the President using offensive language. Following a report to authorities, he was arrested and appeared before Magistrate Sithabile Zungula, who ordered him to remain in custody until further court proceedings.

The case is expected to continue at a later date.
