The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has announced plans to lay criminal charges against a TikTok user, Lethabo_Sebapo, who allegedly forced alcohol, suspected to be beer, into the mouth of a fish.
In a viral video, Lethabo_Sebapo is shown holding the fish in one hand while pouring the beverage into the fish’s mouth, all while laughing. The NSPCA has confirmed that a docket is being compiled, with the TikTok user set to face charges under the Animals Protection Act.
The organization stated, “The publisher, who identifies as ‘fun, entrepreneur, CEO and innovative’ on TikTok, will be prosecuted. We hope this prosecution will serve as a deterrent against the publishing and committing of animal cruelty for entertainment purposes.”
After tracking down and contacting Lethabo_Sebapo, the individual admitted to the act, calling it “fun.” The NSPCA expressed concern over the growing trend of using social media platforms to showcase acts of animal cruelty.
The organization was encouraged by the widespread condemnation of the incident, which reflects the compassion many South Africans have for animals, including fish, who are often overlooked in their capacity for pain and suffering.
